I hereby Proclaim,
Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Day is
 September 28th 2007!

Greetings:
Mitochondrial Diseases devastate the body, but Megan Grace Sheridan shows us, they do not have to devastate the spirit.  This event "Music For Megan", is raising much needed awareness and research funding for Mitochondrial Disease, for which there is currently no cure.

Mitochondrial Diseases occur when a genetic flaw cause the mitochondria to be unable to completely turn food into fuel for the body.  When functioning properly, mitochondria produce 90% of the body's energy for basic life processes.  When functioning improperly, the cells in which the mitochondria are housed do not receive sufficient energy to sustain their processes, leading to an array of possible negative health effects for the patient.
Treatment for those afflicted with Mitochondrial Disease is currently limited to alleviating their suffering and the symptoms.  Symptoms can include seizures, blindness, deafness, diabetes or hypoglycemia, heart failure, strokes, developmental delays, and progressive muscle weakness.  The disease also drains the body of energy, leaving it more susceptible to and less able to fight common illnesses.

We need to raise awareness and funds for this devastating disease.  Children like Megan are living lives the rest of us cannot even imagine.  I want to thank the organizers, performers, and audience for each doing their part to fight Mitochondrial Disease.

Sincerely,

Sonny Perdue
